Casual Beach Bash, 15th February 2008

The Beach Bash is held on a Friday evening and after a day max of 33 degrees it was quite a reasonable but breezy evening. The event consists of a run/walk from the Henley to Grange jetty and back along the sand, just a tiny fraction under 4kms. The slightly cooler weather made for a less crowded beach, which was was a problem last year particularly under the jetty. This year we had new winners all round. Craig Calliess won the men's run by just four seconds from Liam Thomas. Anthony Brattoli, winner 2003 - 2007 unfortunately did not start in 2008. Our new ladies winner was Bisa Petrovic and the walk was won by SARRC's Bill (Billy Boy) Eldridge. Numbers were very similar to last year with over 100 entrants and 98 official finishers, (two unofficial were not included).
Winners were:
1st male runner      Craig Calliess  17:08
1st female runner    Bisa Petrovic  19:58
1st walker              Bill Eldridge    31:20

BEACH BASH 2009 RACE REPORT

The Beach Bash is a 4km event from the Henley Jetty to the Grange Jetty and return run along the beach.  It was held on Friday 6th March at 6:30pm 30min later than previously to give people more time to get there. The Race Director Rod Martin and his team of loyal supporters and volunteers are to be congratulated on putting on a very well run no fuss event which was enjoyed by all.  The weather was superb with a mild south west wind to cool us down on the return leg. The tide was out and the sand firm resulting in some fast times.

The winners were
Runners
Male       1st  Craig Calliess   15:03
                2nd  Dean Elliott        15:53
                3rd  Shannon Barry  15:57
Female  1st   Megan Inge        17:58
                2nd  Alexine Moller    18:22
                3rd  Ellie Magarey     18:31
Walkers 1st   Bill Eldridge       29:20
                2nd  Gary Bunce        33:10
                3rd  Jodi Dowden     34:05

Prizes went to the winners only. The Race Directors encouragement award went to the fast finishing Madeline Dowden who sprinted across the line with the biggest grin.  A special encouragement award was also awarded to the young Lachlan Hastings one of a family of 4 who competed.

It was great to have a number of family groups competing.  There was also the traditional great support from Step-into-Life.

Some interesting statistics: Females (51) outnumbered the males (39); runners (67) outnumbered the walkers (23).

BEACH BASH 2010 RACE REPORT

Friday 5th March 2010
The weather forecast for the Friday evening of the Beach Bash Run is not that encouraging. Windy, with the chance of a storm and showers.

After a hard days work, I head down to Henley Square about 5.30 pm and Hey! I can even find a car park easy enough. I think that changed in the next half hour, as car parks became premium.

Over to the sign in desk and pay my entry fee... I must apologise for not entering online or at the SARRC office earlier. It really does place a lot of strain on organisers to process a lot of late entries just before the start of an event. I venture over to the railing and lookout to sea; it’s a high tide...Bugger! Virtually no hard sand at all to run on. A decision to be made. Soft sand or wet shoes! (I took the wet shoe option).

With a couple of the fitness clubs bringing their members along, a good sprinkling of SARRC members and some new comers , I believe the field was about 120 strong.

Come 6.15 pm we wander down to the start. 6.30 pm Rod Martin sends us on the way of our 4 km jaunt.

Trying still to get a reasonable time, most people stick to the little hard sand there is, and get wet every time a wave comes in. After about 400 to 500 metres we come to the" Point" where for a very short distance there is no beach, the rocks reach right into the sea. Nothing to do but wade mid thigh high through the water. Too deep to actually run. Through that and more of the same, till we get to the Grange Jetty. A nice deep pool under the jetty turn point, before duplicating the trip home, back to Henley Jetty.

The weather actually held off and was very good.

Overall a hard run. Don't know about anyone else, but my quads were absolutely on fire, a combination of running through heavy sand and water. Not a night for personal bests, i.e. my time, 4 minutes slower than year before, but I believe every one had some fun and an enjoyable night.

Good to see so many budding runners, walkers and young children out.

A big thank you to event organisers and all volunteers who helped.

And to round things out...A nice bag of HOT Chips...lovely.
