CARISBROOKE CLASSIC RACE REPORT - 2 APRIL 2006
WOW! What a great place to start, finish and bask in the glory of our performances! The ‘Harry Bowey Reserve’ named after a former long serving councillor who became mayor of Salisbury between 1965 and 1978. We had to change the start / finish point as our usual place was pre-booked. However, we all agree that we should keep it at Harry’s.
WOW! My helpers were magnificent, putting up with my bossiness and making and carrying out suggestions- such as Richard suggesting that someone goes back to our old starting point and direct those who assumed everything would be the same and did not read the entry form. Richard directed many to Harry.
Due to sad circumstances we did not have a lead cyclist for the event. Ian Roberts, unable to defend his 10 K title as he is running in the Canberra marathon suggested that he check the course signage I put out at 5.30 that morning. This was fortuitous as some locals thought they had a better course and changed some arrows around. He also acted as lead cyclist (for most of the way) for the event before taking up his duties at the finish system.
After the event, when I picked up the signage, some locals still thought they had a better course. One even had a use for an arrow.
I thank the Melissa White family for supplying all of the marshals, drink station attendants and the fruit.
WOW! What great weather we had, no doubt contributing to the many great performances. Many race records were set. In the 10 Km dale set a record, Leah reduced her record and Barbara set a record in the 10 m walk to add to her 5 km record. In the 5 Km Simon and Elizabeth set records and in the walk Peter smashed his previous record by over one and a half minutes. In the Classic 1 km all winners had to create records as, if you remember that downpour last year, we were unable to take times. The Moss family cleaned up in three divisions and Stephanie advancing to the new age group deservedly setting the record.
Join us at Harry next year!
