CARISBROOKE CLASSIC RACE REPORT - 6 APRIL 2008
Very good conditions greeted the fourth running of the Classic as a 5/10 K event and the third from the Harry Bowey Reserve. The number of participants have steadily increased over this time with over 200 individual entrants raising over $1,000 for the Melissa White Foundation.
The day did not start off so well for race director, John, as he was locked out of the gate leading from Malinya Drive to the road leading to the reserve. There was an after hours number on the sign post there so he phoned it and after many tries he was able to contact someone. John had only recently purchased a mobile phone and this was the first time it was useful. At 6.00 am the regular security person came along and opened the gate. Perhaps John was there earlier than usual, being keen to set up the course ready for the event.
Another problem was discovered. The stripper wire was not at the event. This was used by Richard, our stripper, who tears off the bottom slip from the chest number sheet and places them in order on the wire to enable the results to be recorded. Resilient race director found the solution, finding another use for the van aerial.
At 8.00 am all participants were sent off on their merry way and it all went smoothly after that.
Andrea and Michael White, parents of Melissa, and various other family members acted as marshals and drink station attendants and well supported the participants. Andy Ryder was also on hand to help. Many SARRC members also helped at the start and finish area. Thank you all.
The Whites decided to include a BBQ to raise more funds and this was well supported, especially by John.
The City of Salisbury looked after us in waiving the hire fees for the facilities and providing us with detailed information on safe food handling. They were also keen to look after the track by not allowing the van to drive over it and not even allowing it to be inside the area. This provided us with a problem, especially lead cyclist John Hallifax as he was asked to pick up all of the track signage after the event. If you are game ask him how it went, collecting those heavy track signs.
There were many good performances around that varied course. Joe Colarich smashed the 5km walk record by over 1.5 minutes, preferring to walk the 5km this year rather than the 10km. In the 10km walk James Hoare won for the second year in a row and Cheryl Wageningen relegated last year’s winner to second place in the female section. In the 10km run, Karen Sawyer broke the record set by Leah Wright in 2006 by 20 seconds, improving on her second place in 2007.
It was pleasing to note many new names in the placegetters of most events.
In the 1km feature race, Taylor Cocking was only 1 second from the record in her 9 years and under section. In the boys division, Connor Moss won the pre-teens section. He moved up from the 9 and under section of last year, enabling Ryan Moss to win that event.
At the presentation ceremony, one champion was missed and, hopefully, the office has rectified the over sight. Check out our web site for the results.
All present enjoyed the event and felt good supporting the worthwhile charity.
