An established favourite among Adelaide runners (first held in 1980 by Distance Runners Club of SA), this event is outstanding for its natural beauty. Starting at Athelstone Primary School, the half marathon passes beside the riverside vegetation of the Torrens Linear Park, while the 10km race joins it just after half way. Tall Red Gums give overhead shade, with a changing variety of native shrubs at eye level. Runners are accompanied by the clamour of native birds - Rainbow and Musk Lorikeets, White-plumed and New Holland Honeyeaters, Red Wattlebirds and Noisy Miners.
The bitumen track is well suited to the needs of distance runners, whether they are veterans wanting to do a good time, or beginners just wanting a pleasant run. Both will find plenty of good company. Downhill overall, the track has enough undulations and bends to keep it interesting (see course elevation on this page).
The course ends at Pinky Flat, a site rich in historical associations, once a social centre of the Kaurna people, and the scene of the first bridge across the Torrens. It is named not, alas, after the vanished Bilby, but after a kind of plonk drunk by unemployed people here in the 1930's.
