RACE REPORT OF THE 2008 30th ASICS ADELAIDE MARATHON

Highlights
The first Adelaide marathon was held in 1978 and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2008 with a 34% increase in entrants to 873 including 275 marathon runners and walkers.

Weather
Heavy overnight squalls began to abate before the marathon start at 645 am.  There was a short shower early in the race and longer steady rain shortly after the leaders finished.  Thereafter the clouds cleared and the sun provided pleasant running conditions.

The prevailing winds were from the west/north west instead of the usual south west and were strong along the beachfront section of the course.  Runners battled for 8 kilometres into headwinds from Glenelg to Grange.

Course
This was the second year for the new marathon course introduced in 2007 but with outgoing runners moved to Military Road, Henley Beach to eliminate the congestion along the Esplanade beachfront last year.

The half marathon started again at Henley Sailing Club, West Beach and followed the marathon course.  The 8.5 kilometre course from the Flinders Park Football Club, Flinders Park crossed Hartley Road and joined the marathon course nearby.   The course was flat with only short climbs under road bridges to contend with.  The section along the River Torrens Linear Park was reduced to 8 kilometres compared with previous marathons.

The marathon course followed the Westside Bikeway, passing by the Old Gum Tree (the location of the reading of the Proclamation by Governor John Hindmarsh creating the colony of South Australia on December 28, 1836, to reach the beach at Glenelg North.  It followed the beach front for 14 kilometres to Grange before returning to West Beach and crossing into the River Torrens Linear Park.  Once through the cemetery at Hindmarsh, it turned along the back of the Southwark Brewery through Thebarton to the finish.

Jordan Spencer as Master of Ceremonies provided regular updates on the progress of the race, conducted interviews of finishers and ran the presentation ceremony smoothly.

ENTRANTS
56 marathon entrants came from outside South Australia, made up of Australian Capital Territory (2), New South Wales (15), Northern Territory (2), Queensland (4), Tasmania (2), Victoria (20) and Western Australia (2). Overseas entrants were from Austria (1), Germany (1) Japan (1), New Zealand (2), Singapore (2) and UK (2),

The number of entrants in the marathon increased by 45% and by 48% in the half marathon.
