RACE REPORT OF THE 2009 31st ASICS ADELAIDE MARATHON

Highlights

The first Adelaide marathon was held in 1979 and celebrated its 31st anniversary in 2009 with an increase of 18% increase in entrants to 1034 including 308 marathon runners and walkers.

Weather
Set up at Santos Stadium on Saturday afternoon was hampered by heavy rain that had volunteers sloshing through ankle deep water.  Overnight showers had abated before the marathon walkers started at 545 am.  There were a couple of light showers early in the race with overcast conditions that gave way to sunshine later in the morning in time for the 11 am presentation.

The prevailing winds were south westerly, cold and strong at times which hampered runners along the Westside Bikeway for the first 10 km and the 4km stint back along the beachfront from Grange to the Linear Park. Conditions were more pleasant along the last 10 km where the Linear Park provided protection.

Course
This was the third year for the new marathon course introduced in 2007 but diversions were threatened or forced by engineering works at Glenelg (waste water pipeline), Henley Beach/River Torrens (channel across Linear Park path), Henley Beach Esplanade (paving and road resurfacing), Lockleys (Breakout Creek wetlands), Flinders Park (new Linear Park path) and Hindmarsh (riverbank stabilization).  This forced diversions along the course and remeasurement of the course.

The marathon course again followed the Westside Bikeway, passing by the Old Gum Tree (the location of the reading of the Proclamation by Governor John Hindmarsh creating the colony of South Australia on December 28, 1836, to reach the beach at Glenelg North.  It followed the beach front for 14 kilometres to Grange before returning to West Beach and crossing into the River Torrens Linear Park.  Once through the cemetery at Hindmarsh, it turned along the back of the Southwark Brewery through Thebarton to the finish.

The increased numbers in the half marathon required relocation to a new start at Henley High School.  It has better facilities and wide roads more suitable for a mass race start.

The 10km race was reinstituted and based at the Lockleys Bowling Club, the traditional half marathon start for many years.

The Santos Stadium running track is scheduled to be resurfaced from July to December 2010 and if this proceeds to schedule the stadium will not be available.
