INAUGURAL SUMMIT 2 SEA - "A Dash of Chilli"
SUNDAY 3 JANUARY 2010
33.5km, 19.5km and 15.5 options
Everyone is Welcome to come along, both Runners and Walkers. There is no entry fee for this run.

The first Sunday in January 2009 saw the Inaugural Adelaide Sea to Summit run from Kingston Park to the Mt Lofty summit. Over 70 people took part in the run along the bushland path, devised by the late George Driscoll, that leaves the beach and rises up through Sturt Gorge Recreation Park, Belair National Park and Cleland Conservation Park. Not everyone did the full route - some decided to run 20kms from Bellevue Heights, some ran from the halfway mark at Hawthordene, whilst others ran the last 12 kms from Belair. It was a memorable event enjoyed by all.

This year the event will be staged in reverse, from the Mt Lofty summit to the sea. Last year, more than one person suggested that as it was the height of summer we should really be running the course in the opposite direction, finishing with a cooling dip at the end of the run. Indeed, that famous bush trail poet, The Rocker, was heard to utter “though why that clown chose up not down is anybody's guess!". So based on this advice we decided to hold the event this year starting at the mountain top runnng downhill to the sea in the mistaken belief that it might be a touch easier. (Please note that the Sea to Summit trail will be run as an official SARRC event on Sunday 12 September, 2010)

Last year we began a tradition of dedicating the event to the honouring of a local legend. People were invited to run the inaugural event with the legendary Kym Williams. This year we invite you to join a Victorian, Peter "Chilliman" Mullins. Ultramarathoner, trail runner extraordinaire and downhill specialist, Peter was one of the first to suggest that we were running the course in the wrong direction. Peter has become a great friend and supporter of trail running here in South Australia, particularly in his promotion of the Yurrebilla Trail 56km Ultra. Through his efforts over a fifth of the field in this year's Yurrebilla came from interstate. So join us in honouring the Chilliman in a "Dash of Chilli" and good luck if you reckon you might be able to keep up with him!

A "No Cost Low Support Run/Walk...
Please note that like the other trail runs that make up the SARRC Trail Running calendar, this event is a "no cost low support run." You are not required to register and can just turn up on the day at any of the starting locations. We do ask you to sign on at your starting location and sign off when you finish, just so that we know that everyone has got home safely. As a low support run, there will be no marshals out on the course and participants are asked to ensure that they follow road traffic rules at all times, taking particular care to use the pedestrian traffic lights when crossing main roads such as South Rd and Brighton Rd.

Finishing at Brighton Beach
This year we have decided to finish the run at Brighton Jetty, extending the distance an extra 2kms. We reckon it will be worth the extra 2km run along the beach just to access the beach showers and the numerous Jetty Rd cafes for that post run coffee or even a well earned breakfast. Last year it was a lot of fun welcoming home all the finishers. So once you have finished, had a drink and a quick dip, set yourself up on the jetty or on the beach and cheer home the runners behind you. Pending the state of the tide the finish line will be a line drawn in the sand immediately under the jetty.

Starting Locations and Starting Times
Mt Lofty Summit (33.5km approx) - 7.00am
Apex Park, Hawthorndene (19.5km approx) - from 8.00am
(note change in distance and time)
Bellevue Heights - 19 Bushland Drive (15.5km approx) - from 8.30am
(note change in distance and time)

We previoulsy advertised five starting locations but have decided to go with just two locations in addition to the Mt Lofty Summit start. If you still wish to join in the run but don't think you can make the 15km distance it is suggested that you start from the Bellevue Heights at 8.30 am but take a short cut to Brighton Jetty. This can be done by staying on the main route until the corner of Diagonal Rd and Seacombe Rd. Follow Diagonal Rd to Marion Shopping Centre, turning left into Sturt Rd which takes you to Brighton Rd. Turn right into Brighton Rd then a quick left into Jetty Rd and you will find your way to the Brighton Jetty. All up it is estimated that this route is 11.2kms and avoids the steep climb up Seacombe Heights. Other runners struggling to finish the run may also choose this option.

Transport to the Summit Start
A number of minibuses have been booked to take runners from Brighton to the Mt Lofty summit. Buses will leave from Brighton at 6.00am and will cost $10 a ticket. Due to the limited number of seats you need to book a seat in advance by emailing David Close.  Seats will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. And to ensure we don't go broke, if you book a seat you will be obligated to pay for it even if you do not end up running on the day. David will tell you whether you have been successful in getting a seat. The buses will leave from The Esplanade, just north of Brighton Jetty. There should be adequate street parking at that time of the day for people leaving their cars. If you are driving directly to the Summit, be aware that you will need $2 to park your car in the car park located at the Mt Lofty Summit.

The Course - Handbook and Maps
DOWNLOAD THE COURSE MAP AND NOTES. Please note that distances on the maps are based on the reading of one garmin and there is likely to be some variability. Whilst the Summit to Sea Trail has no official markers every attempt will be made to mark the course throughout to assist participants to find their way and to ensure that no one gets lost.

Water en route
There are adequate opportunities for accessing water along the way so runners shouldn't have to carry too much. Water will be available at Belair National Park; Apex Park, Hawthorndene; Bushland Rd, Bellevue Heights; Shell Petrol Station, South Rd; Park along Gully Rd, Seacliff Park

Toilets en route
Belair National Park; Apex Park, Hawthorndene; Shell Petrol Station/ McDonalds, South Rd. Please note that it is unlikely that we will have access to the toilets at the summit before the run. Sorry!

Fire Ban
The run will be cancelled if there is a day of Total Fire Ban in the Mt Lofty Ranges District or if weather conditions are such that the health and safety of runners will be put at risk. Refer to the CFS website for details of of fire bans as trail will be closed when there is a Total Fire Ban in the Mt Lofty Ranges District. In such an event an email will be sent out through the trail running email list on the day before the run or sooner.

National Parks
As the trail runs through local National Parks, all participants are asked to observe park rules and regulations, ensuring that other park visitors are in no way put out by the event. We are grateful for the continued support of the SA Department of Heritage and Environment.
